After two years of virtual re-enactments, APABA-DC is excited to hold its 8th annual trial re-enactment at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit on May 17, 2023 at 6 p.m.  This event is free and open to the public, but please RSVP by Monday, May 15th to be added to the security list for the courthouse.

Each year, APABA-DC invites a cast of federal, state, and local judges to participate in a re-enactment of cases of particular significance to the Asian American and Pacific Islander community.  This year, APABA-DC will host the trial re-enactment of “Justice Denied: Wards Cove Packing Co. v. Atonio,” which describes how, in the 1970s, Filipino and native Alaskan activists led workers in Alaskan canneries to organize and file class actions against unfair and discriminatory working conditions that had prevailed for decades against Asian American cannery workers.  After the decision, Congress passed the Civil Rights Act of 1991, effectively amending Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, to counter the Supreme Court’s holding in Wards Cove Packing.
